Thank you all for tuning in each month to catch up on what’s going on here at the Center for Independent Living of Central Pennsylvania. We look forward to the opportunity to share the work we do with consumers and stakeholders through this newsletter.
In September of 1991, myself, Janetta and two other members of the CILCP community traveled several blocks in Harrisburg city, against traffic, videotaping the lack of accessible curb cuts. This information was presented to the Harrisburg City Council along with a request for the installation of curb cuts. As a result, $250,000 was allocated for the construction of accessible curb cuts that year.
Advocacy has always been an integral part of the CILCP’s mission. We are wholeheartedly committed to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities in our state and beyond. Therefore, we are always looking for opportunities to make genuine improvements to services and programs offered by the state and locally.
Sometimes, advocacy looks like videotaping the lack of curb cuts in downtown Harrisburg. Sometimes, advocacy looks like working with the Harrisburg Housing Authority to design accessible housing units. And, sometimes, advocacy looks like working alongside elected officials to pass legislation that will expand services that allow individuals with disabilities in our state to live well.
Regardless of the activity, we are committed to going “all in” when it comes to advocacy and we will fight on behalf of the disability community to do what’s right. Please, continue to follow along with our advocacy efforts by reading this newsletter each month. We’re in this together and we appreciate your support..
