Y.A.C.C.—Young Adults Creating Change!
Earlier this year, after recognizing a need for youth-driven support in the community, Erin Weierbach, a Living Well Specialist at the CILCP, developed an 8-week program entitled Youth Matters, which allowed young adults with disabilities to build relationships, provide feedback regarding youth programming and commit to furthering independence. The Youth Matters program was very successful, check out some of the highlights.
At the end of the program, the young adults (ages 14-24) who had attended Youth Matters expressed a desire to continue meeting and supporting one another. As a result, the CILCP team, along with the young adult leaders, decided to work together to create Y.A.C.C.—Young Adults Creating Change, a name that was chosen by the group members.
Currently, there are 10 young adults in the group. They meet the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month, typically from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Meeting locations vary depending on the activities. Some upcoming meetings include:
- July 18 at Kristy’s Whistle Stop (View the event on CILCP’s calendar)
- August 1st at ABC West Bowling (View the event on CILCP’s calendar)
“The group’s main objective is to create a safe space for young adults with disabilities to make friends and support each other,” explains Erin Weierbach, Living Well Specialist at CILCP. “They discuss issues relevant to young adults and how they can effectively advocate for themselves while removing barriers and challenging the stigma surrounding disability.”
“The individuals in the group have developed strong leadership skills and they are constantly looking for other opportunities to engage with the community,” Weierbach explains. “Y.A.C.C. is youth-driven, meaning the group is run BY and FOR young adults with disabilities. I help facilitate meetings based on the direction the group would like to go.”
Y.A.C.C. is open to all young adults (ages 14-24) who self-identify as having a disability or are eligible for an IEP or 504 plan. If you are interested in making positive change in the community, have a desire to connect with other young adults your age to provide peer support and want to have fun while taking on leadership opportunities, Y.A.C.C. is for you!
