Ways people can get more involved

Wheels In Motion (WIM) is a grassroots, cross-disability advocacy group organized to give people with disabilities a forum where they can voice their concerns and be supported as they learn to advocate for themselves! Legal Action Committee (LAC) reviews possible discriminatory issues to determine the necessary steps to resolve them by implementing legal remedies that include but not limited to letters of potential actions as well as filing legal complaints. If you are interested in being a part of LAC and have additional questions, contact Pam Auer.

The Nothing About Us Without Us Campaign brings attention to the right of people with diverse disabilities to live in the community with full participation. That it is the basic civil rights that the ADA was intended to secure for all individuals with disabilities – Nothing About Us Without Us! This effort is targeted toward any city or borough. If you are interested in being a part of this grassroots advocacy group and have additional questions, contact Pam Auer.

Past successes:

CILCP assisted in the creation of Pa. Transportation Alliance & Rolling Justice 2000 which resulted in legislation that created PA Shared Ride Program providing affordable, accessible transportation in 66 counties in Pennsylvania.

Accessible Communities Today (ACT), a grassroots advocacy group, was formed in cooperation with the CILCP. ACT continues to advocate for individuals with disabilities’ right for accessibility and full community participation in ways that are both seen and unseen.

ACT efforts have resulted in numerous positive changes:

  • Additional curb cuts in the City of Harrisburg.
  • Development of ADA Potential Violation Tickets
  • Community Celebration of Human Spirit in recognition of the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Advocacy campaign by the community defended Home and Community-based Services funding from proposed state cuts
  • Sweep Up Your Neighbor, another advocacy effort by CILCP and ACT, went national with an article written by an Accessible Communities Today (ACT) group on the sweep of Midtown Harrisburg to make it accessible. The article was published in Reading in Independent Living, a publication of Independent Living Research Utilization (ILRU). As a result of this article, the action CILCP took was nationally acknowledged as an innovative CIL project.
Additional Successes:

  • CILCP advocated for Capitol Area Transit to purchase 10 accessible fixed route buses with lifts.
  • CILCP has assisted three other Pennsylvania CILs in their restructuring.
  • CILCP has improved rural PA transportation services through advocacy with local and state governments.
  • CILCP assisted in developing a Home Builders Show obstacle course, which demonstrated the need for accessibility, assistive technology, and CILCP services.
  • CILCP facilitated the logistics for the Statewide Independent Living Conference, including sensitivity training of the Hilton Harrisburg & Towers staff.
  • CILCP has participated in building Possibility Place, the first fully accessible playground in Central Pa. CILCP staff was instrumental in the advocacy of this project, as well as the provision of technical assistance.
  • CILCP collaborated with Dauphin County Housing for Baldwin Village, the fully accessible 12-unit complex in Steelton, Pa.
